Green Tourism certification for UK hotels

Green Tourism is a long-running certification programme for tourism and hospitality businesses, with graded awards. This guide covers what it is, where its criteria are published, and — honestly — what our diagnostic can and cannot tell you about it.

What Green Tourism is

Green Tourism is a sustainability certification programme for tourism and hospitality businesses. It describes itself as a global programme running for over 25 years and recognised by Travalyst, and it certifies both general tourism and hospitality operations and, separately, events and meetings venues.

Its awards are graded rather than pass/fail — Bronze, Silver and Gold, with the level reflecting how much of the criteria a business has in place. The current thresholds, the criteria themselves, the assessment process and the fees are all published by Green Tourism, and that is where to read them.

We do not publish a Green Tourism mapping — here is why

Every question in our diagnostic is tagged with the frameworks its subject matter evidences. Those tags are currently:

  • GSTC Hotel Standard
  • Green Key
  • Hotel Sustainability Basics
  • ISO 14001
  • UK legal requirement

Green Tourism is not one of them. We could put a Green Tourism badge on this page and let you assume otherwise, and the temptation on a marketing site is real. But the entire proposition of this product is that a claim it makes can be checked, and a mapping we have not built is not a claim we can stand behind — so we are telling you it does not exist rather than implying it does.

What the diagnostic does give you is a structured, weighted picture of 8 operational areas — governance, energy, carbon, water, waste, procurement, people and biodiversity — which is the same ground any tourism certification asks a business to account for. 45 questions, an overall score, and the gaps ranked. If you walk into a Green Tourism assessment knowing your own numbers and holding the evidence, you are in a materially different position from a property that does not.

What is worth doing either way

Measure before you spend. Most of what any scheme asks about is management practice — a written policy, a named owner, recorded consumption, retained evidence — rather than capital investment. Properties routinely buy equipment to fix a problem that was actually a record-keeping problem.

Start the evidence clock now. A full year of utility bills, waste transfer notes and training records accrues at one month per month regardless of how motivated you are. It is the one part of preparation that cannot be compressed, which makes it the part to start first.

Re-score, don't re-guess. A second baseline a quarter later turns “we've made some changes” into a documented trend, and a trend is what an assessor, a corporate buyer or a tourism board is actually looking for.

What this guide is not

It is not a Green Tourism application, a summary of its criteria, or an indication of what grade you would receive. We are not affiliated with Green Tourism, we quote no fees, and nothing we produce carries any weight in their assessment. Certification is awarded by assessors who are independent of anyone who prepared the property — that is what makes it worth holding.

You can run the free diagnostic without an account and see the whole picture in about ten minutes.

This assessment is designed to help benchmark sustainability practices and prepare for recognised sustainability frameworks. It does not constitute certification. EcoPulseIQ is not a certification body, is not affiliated with any certification scheme named on this page, and cannot award or influence a certification decision.
