Green Key certification for UK hotels

Green Key describes itself as “an international sustainability certification programme for tourism establishments and hospitality businesses”, with the certificate representing a commitment to operate according to environmental and social sustainability criteria set by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). It is open to more than hotels — hostels, small accommodations, campsites, holiday parks, conference centres, restaurants and attractions are all in scope.

FEE publishes the criteria on the Green Key site, and revises them on a multi-year cycle, so the first thing worth checking is which criteria set your application would fall under. The scheme is delivered country by country, so the operator you deal with, the process and the fees depend on where your property is.

We deliberately do not reproduce Green Key's criteria here. They belong to the scheme, they are revised, and a second-hand summary on someone else's marketing site is exactly what leads a hotel to spend a quarter preparing for a requirement that no longer reads the way it did. Read them at the source. What follows is only what we can state about our own product.

The useful part is not the total. It is that the breakdown tells you where a Green Key application is likely to press hardest on your operation, so you know which cupboard to start opening.

• Take a baseline before you buy anything. Most of what a scheme asks about is management practice, not capital spend, and you cannot tell which of the two you are short on until you have measured.
• Give one named person the job. Every framework we map asks who is accountable, and it is the single cheapest gap to close.
• Start the evidence clock early. A year of utility bills, waste transfer notes and staff training records can only be accumulated over time — no amount of preparation compresses that.
• Close gaps in priority order, then re-score. A second baseline three months later is what turns 'we did some things' into a documented trend.

None of this is specific to Green Key, which is rather the point: the management foundations — a written policy, a named owner, measured consumption, retained evidence — are what every scheme asks for, and they are what an unprepared property is missing when an assessor arrives.

It is not a Green Key application, a checklist of Green Key criteria, or an indication of whether you would pass.
